Working with an eighth-grader on his math homework my brain is aching for a mental salve to ease the pain. There’s been a slight but steady decline of math knowledge since my last bit of formal education. And the math I use on a frequent basis is more inherent than adhering to established educational modes; in other words, I see the answer but can’t tell you how I got there.<\/p>\n

Working with Graham, I have to try explain how I get there, so here we both go climbing up the learning curve. You know what I’m talking about, right?<\/p>\n

So that mental salve I was talking about, yeah, I grab them whenever I can. And the most recent one came from Facebook.<\/p>\n

How many squares do you see? The answers were all over the place, and I want to say that your answer says a lot about you. I don’t know what it says, but I think it says a lot.<\/p>\n

So, how many did I see? Well, a lot. But rather than just tell you my answer I need to show my work. That’s what I always tell Graham, and that’s what I try to do with him as well. Don’t think it will settle the question, but here’s my answer:<\/p>\n
